Sherpa Moki Mittens

MokiMittensbySherpa-4In a perfect world, we would be starting to put our winter attire away for the season, but Mother Nature has other plans. Here in Calgary, we seem to have a never-ending supply of snow, so our winter wardrobe remains at the front of our closet. Thankfully, I just added THE BEST cold weather item ever (and I’m not even prone to exaggeration)  – the Sherpa Moki mittens. Seriously, why aren’t all toddler mitts designed this well?!?!

As soon as our Mokis arrived in the mail, I put them on Grayson’s hands – and they stayed on!!!  If you have a toddler, you know that is an accomplishment in and of itself!MokiMittensbySherpa-1

As warm and comfortable as every other brand of mittens we’ve tried (and there have been a few) might be, they would only ever provide protection for approximately 30 seconds, and then Grayson would yank them off. It didn’t matter how tight we pulled the Velcro strap, mitts were impossible to keep on our fidgety little guy.

Enter the Sherpa Moki Mittens. With a simple design twist – a long, stretchy fleece sleeve that covers the wrist and forearm – our problem was solved! I ordered the larger 12-24 month size (they also have a 0-12 month size) in the hopes that we will get a second season out of them, so the sleeve currently reaches almost to his armpit.MokiMittensbySherpa-2

Once the sleeve is under a jacket, there’s no way those mitts are coming off. Grayson still tries to get them off every time I put them on, but he gives up pretty quickly once his efforts prove futile. After the initial struggle, he always seems perfectly comfortable and happy to wear them.

The mitts’ exterior shell is made from a waterproof nylon, and the inside is lined with the same soft fleece used for the sleeve. Unfortunately, they are not machine-washable, but hand washing a couple mitts every couple of weeks isn’t a big deal. You can see from the photos that I opted for boring gray, but the Mokis come in a ton of different colors to match every personality and outfit.

These mittens are fairly lightweight, but still suitable for all but the coldest days (Sherpa suggests that they are good to -10C.) For us, they’ve been perfect for playing at the park, going for walks or even chilly morning car rides.

I’d love to believe that spring weather is just around the corner, but I live in Calgary and am confident that I’ll be pulling these mittens out a few more times before summer’s arrival. And on those days, I’ll probably grumble about the weather, but I’ll still be raving about these mittens.
